Amitriptyline is used to treat symptoms of depression. It works on the central nervous system (CNS) to increase levels of certain chemicals in the brain. This medication is a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA). Amitriptyline is also used to treat eating disorders, post-herpetic neuralgia (the burning, stabbing pains, or aches that may last for months or years after a shingles infection), and to prevent migraine headaches. This medicine is available only with your doctor’s prescription
HOW TO TAKE
Amitriptyline comes as a tablet to be taken orally. It is usually taken one to four times a day. Take amitriptyline at around the same time(s) every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take amitriptyline exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
WARNINGS
Amitriptyline can cause dizziness and drowsiness during the first few hours after you take it. If you notice drowsiness while you take this drug, your doctor may have you take your dose at bedtime.
Amitriptyline oral tablet can interact with other medications, vitamins, or herbs you may be taking. An interaction is when a substance changes the way a drug works. This can be harmful or prevent the drug from working well.
Do not take Amitriptyline together with Mono Amine Oxidase inhibitors (e.g. Phenelzine, Tranylcypromine, Selegiline), Topiramate, Fluoxetine, Paroxetine, and Cimetidine.
