Esomeprazole, the S-isomer of omeprazole, is a second-generation proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that provides 24-hour rapid and sustained relief from heartburns and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is also used It is used to treat duodenal and gastric ulcers, erosive esophagitis, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Esomeprazole is safe and tolerable to use, even in children between 1 – 11 years. It is the only PPI approved for use in children by the FDA.
HOW TO USE
For GERD: 20 or 40mg once daily for 4 – 8 weeks.
For Helicobacter pylori: 40mg in combination with other therapy once daily for 10 days.
For preventing the risk of NSAID-induced ulcers: 20 to 40mg once daily for 6 months.
For Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: 40mg twice daily.
Esomeprazole can be taken or without food.
WARNINGS
Do not take Esomeprazole if you had breathing problems, kidney problems, or a severe allergic reaction after taking Esomeprazole in the past.
Do not take this medication if you are allergic to Esomeprazole or to similar medicines such as lansoprazole, omeprazole, pantoprazole, or rabeprazole.
